Bergen
op Zoom is an old, stately city originating from the 12th
century. In the Middle Ages, Bergen op Zoom was an important
trading town. Twice a year a market was held which lasted
for weeks and attracted merchants from all over Europe. In
1567 the town changed dramatically following the construction
of extended military installations and various sieges. |
Within Bergen
op Zoom, the rich culture of the town of Marquises is evident
in the many monuments such as the “Gavengenpoort”
(Prisoner’s Gate), the “Markiezenhof”, the town
hall, the St. Gertrudis church, theatre “De Maagd”,
the fortifications of the Ravelijn and the many restored houses.
The “Markiezenhof” houses a museum, library, restaurant
and more. Exhibitions, musical performances, book markets and
conferences are held there on a regular basis.
The east and south sides of Bergen op Zoom are surrounded by vast
woods, which run all the way into Belgium. They provide an ideal
camping area and a fantastic place for a long walk and enjoying
nature. People who fancy water sports should visit the Binnenschelde
to swim, surf, or go sailing.
Bergen op Zoom is the town of “Parades and Fairs”
due to its many annual events with historic background. The culinary
area of town has a tradition of anchovy, asparagus and strawberries.
The months of May and June are ideal for taking a culinary trip
to Bergen op Zoom.
Anyone who is interested in planning a special conference there
will find a number of exclusive historic locations in Bergen op
Zoom that provide excellent facilities for both large and small
groups.
Bergen op Zoom can be used as the central base for trips to Belgium,
Zeeland, Zuid-Holland and the eastern part of Noord-Brabant. Convenient
connections in all directions are available by car and train.
Areas south of town can also be easily reached on bicycle.
In Bergen op Zoom there are numerous recreational possibilities
and outdoor activities year-round, including walking, skating,
cycling, and swimming. You can even ice-skate in the winter at
the “Grote Markt” (market place). Opportunities for
children include indoor games, a children’s farm, and a
puzzle route at the Markiezenhof.
